Often we are told that we are what we eat. Well, this could not hold more truer as your food do have a way of affecting how you feel. Cranky, bitchy, lethargic or even psychotic are just some of the highs and lows you'll experience. Mood altering food? Oh yes.
The good news is that you can balance out your emotions by paying attention to what you put into your mouth. Here are five ways how food can turn you from sweet girl next door to mad woman on the loose:
Imbalance Diet
This habit of erratic eating is the most common culprit of everybody's foul mood. When your body lacks important nutrients, you're compromising on both emotional and physical well-being. For example, getting too little iron can cause fatigue and inattention while a diet lacking of omega-3s is linked to depression, pessimism and impulsivity.
Experts recommend a Mediterranean diet that is healthy and balanced with goodness of fruits, nuts, vegetables, cereals, legumes and fish. All of which are important sources of nutrients and great in preventing mood swings.
Adrenal Fatigue
Stress and eating a poor quality diet can make you susceptible to adrenal fatigue. If you drink lots of coffee, consume refined sugar and carbohydrates like white bread, rice and pasta, and constantly eat processed or chemical-laden food, you are putting a lot of pressure on your adrenal glands.
These glands are key to a healthy immune system and they act much like the regulators of your body. Healthy adrenal glands are important for supporting proper thyroid function, balancing hormones, maintaining ideal weight, stabilising emotions, controlling cravings and more.
Hormonal Imbalance
Much like adrenal fatigue, the sort of food you consume can affect you in more ways than one. Hormonal imbalance can be due various factors like toxic liver, poor digestion, insulin resistance, hidden inflammation, as well as vitamin, mineral, protein and fatty acid deficiencies.
Women in their late twenties and into their early forties are susceptible to hormonal imbalance and symptoms include PMS, bouts of anger, acne, lack of libido and weight gain. Thus, it is ideal to adopt diets that are low in saturated fat, sodium and full of nutritionally-dense food.
Poor Gut Health
The gastrointestinal tract is often an overlooked part of the body but it could essentially tell you a lot about your moods. Think about it, most of all our nutrients are absorbed through our intestinal tract, so it's not surprising that our moods are severely affected by what we eat.
If your gut health is compromised by an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, that means your digestive tract won't be able to work at it's best. This in turn, takes a toll on our moods with irritability and lethargy being among the obvious symptoms.
Irregular Eating
Fact – food is fuel. Skip a meal and you'll be walking around feeling tired and cranky, which can be blamed on low blood sugar. So it is best to aim for a meal or snack at every four hours and never forget your breakfast as this helps curb cravings later in the day.
But do know this as well, there is a big difference in eating fresh, organic greens and whole grains to consuming a plate full of processed and chemicalised food. You're only piling on the toxicity and deficiency if you choose to go the latter way. This in turn encourages mood swings and health problems among other things.
